Importance of Face to Face Skills in Business

If there were just one skill you could possess when you went into business then you would want that one skill to be excellent face to face skills. When your customer comes into your business being able to look them in the eye when you are talking to them lets them feel as if you are really talking to them and paying attention to them, this is one of the biggest positives a business can have.

A customer that comes into your store and asks you a question will be more likely to make a purchase from the store if they feel like you paid attention to them and that you cared about their wants. It does not matter if you are telling them where in the store that can locate an item or if you are describing the item and what it does. The fact that you are giving them your undivided attention and looking them in the eye makes the difference in how they feel they have been treated.

When you speak to someone in your business look them in the eye, and do not wear dark shades where they cannot see your eyes, and do not wear a hairstyle that obscures part of your face. Both of these items will distract the customer and will cause you to not seem as concerned as if you can clearly look them in the eye when you are talking face to face.

When people are speaking to you do not look down at your desk, or your computer screen, or at anything else. You need to focus all of your attention on what they are saying and what you will say or do in response to them. Make the customer feel as if they are the only thing in the world and like you have the entire day to listen to them. If you are looking at the clock you will seem to be rushing them and this will make them feel like you did not truly care about their problem.

When you greet people in your office for a face to face meeting stand up from your desk and extend your hand. This shows the person that you respect them and that you appreciate the opportunity to do business with them. Make sure that you do not take your seat until the customer has sat down. When you show people common courtesies like this they immediately relax and a relaxed customer spends more money. When they go to leave your office stand up once again and extend your hand for a goodbye handshake. Show them that their visit mattered to you.

When you are choosing the furnishings for your office keep face to face skills in mind. Never have a chair that will make you seem to be a great deal taller than the person you will be looking at. This can make people feel uncomfortable like they did when they were a child and had to see the principal. Make certain the furnishings in your office are inviting for the customer so they feel like they are welcome. One of the face to face skills that you will need is the skill to make people feel welcome in your presence.

If at all possible call the person by name. Do not be too familiar and use first names but Mr. Smith or Mr. Jones will make them feel like you at least remember them. Be sure that when you are speaking to the person that you do not use abbreviations in your speech. Remember that the person you are speaking to is more than likely not as informed about the type of work you do or job that you have so the abbreviated terms will more than likely make them feel uncomfortable.

You also want to let people know that you are truly listening to what they have to say. Inject phrases like “so, if I understand you correctly you are looking for” this allows you to repeat what they said to you and allows you to have a perfectly clear understanding of what the people want and what they expect from you. This can make a huge difference in whether or not you make the sale.
